Born in a small but picturesque town of Lambertville, Pennsylvania, Martin Heade from the early days never tired of admiring the beauty of nature. From childhood, the young master-naturalist amazed local painting teachers. It even got to the point where the student drew more technically and with higher quality than his teachers. After this, it became clear that for Martin’s education he needed specialists of a higher level. Thanks to the family’s financial opportunities, under whose control were a sawmill and a farm, the aspiring artist was able to move to Europe and receive lessons from the best masters of England, France, and Italy.
His habit of traveling often and observing the local nature stayed with him for the rest of his life. Brazil, Colombia, Nicaragua, Jamaica—only a small part of the countries where Martin Heade had the chance to live and create. On one of such trips through the Amazon’s tropical forests, he captured the magical painting of two hummingbirds playing alongside enormous tropical flowers. This painting is a vivid example of Martin Heade’s mastery and understanding of the true essence of nature.
