In the works of Serhiy Grekh, who hides under the pseudonym Feros, the influence of graffiti culture and street art as a whole is clearly evident. That direction was the focus of his early creative years. In 2020, the artist moves from the streets to the studio, using the knowledge and experience he has gained to work with abstract and figurative canvases.
2020 became memorable for Serhiy not only because of a change in his working environment, but also because of global changes in the world order. The global pandemic changed our lives in the strongest way. Against the backdrop of viral hysteria, governments and companies worldwide began implementing practices which, in ordinary times, would have triggered a wave of public outrage. Global tracking of movements, passes for traveling around the city, forced surveillance in case of arrival from the “red zone” countries, and self-isolation—all of this is not something from dystopian George Orwell or Ray Bradbury; it is the reality we live in. The development of technologies and the growth of IT corporations, whose budgets exceed those of half of the countries of Europe, are pushing us further toward a world where there will be no place on our planet without the internet. Places where a person could be completely cut off from civilization. Places where no one would watch over them.
“Ми дуже швидко звикаємо та адаптуємось до нового. Що наводило паніку вчора, ми забудемо вже завтра” – that’s how Serhiy describes the events himself.
«Big brother is watching you»— precisely this iconic phrase from George Orwell’s novel 1984, which became so relevant in 2020, is depicted by Feros in his work, expressing the idea of total surveillance and tracking of each individual in a vivid and “true-to-street” way.
